Halloween Fun!

Today Foster and I hosted a little gathering for some of the neighbors and their children to celebrate the upcoming Spooky holiday, Halloween.  Some came in costume and some just looked festive!  We served pumpkin turkey chili, pumpkin dip and gingersnaps, and ooey, gooey bug cupcakes.  Yum!  The older kids enjoyed pinning the nose on the Jack-O-Lantern and a Halloween bean bag toss.  Thank you to all who helped make this event so much fun!

BTW- When I first mentioned this little "shindig" to mom, her response was as follows, " Courtney, I knew you would eventually get into this, but I didn't think it would happen so soon." Not sure why she was so surprised.  Anyone who knows me knows I love to plan things and I always keep busy.  Now that work isn't on the plate, sucking my creativity out of me each day, I get to use my creative nature in really fun ways...and there is no paperwork!  Looking forward to planning a homecoming party for Daniel and a Christmas party for all out friends in the area!

Montgomery County comes to Town!

This weekend Foster, Welli, Chloe, and I got a visit from the inlaws.  They drove down for a short weekend filled with barking, baby babble, bibs that rarely catch spit-up, and of course lots of hugs and kisses!  We enjoyed a quiet day at the house Saturday, keeping Foster on his schedule (Thank god for Babywise!), but went for brunch Sunday morning at a favorite island diet sabotager, Bright Mornings Cafe.

Although the visit was short, it was sweet, and we enjoyed the company.

Next we are off to the mountains to finally enjoy some cooler weather.  Just watch- the warm weather is sure to follow me wherever I go...YUCK!

The Diaper Debacle

As a super super mom I decided to follow in the footsteps of other super moms who also happen to be environmentally conscious and use cloth diapers.  Of course today's cloth diapers are certainly nothing like your mother's!  They have a cute little shell and liners for daytime and nighttime use.  Apparently they are simple to use,  so leave it to me to have trouble even in the trial run.

Upon the very first use, I had leakage, or rather Foster did.  I decided to ask the expert.  I was absolutely sure that the newer version with snaps were simply not as good as the original ones made with Velcro.  However, if you use them correctly, either version is adequate.  To prevent leakage you have to use the thick daytime liner, not just the skinny extra liner that is meant to be placed in the diaper in addition to the daytime liner. Duh! Apparently after having a baby you truly have lost intelligence!  Wow- what's next?

Amazingly, once the liners were used correctly there was no leakage.  What a concept-

Our Little Pumpkin

Brianna Westfall, our fabulous photographer and new friend, came by the house yesterday to finish the photo shoot we started a few weeks ago.  I had wanted to get a photo for our Halloween card, but Foster was less than cooperative 45 minutes into the shoot, so we had to break it in two.  I believe you will agree that it was worth waiting for when you view the photos.  All the photos will be added to her website very soon, but until then, here is a sneak preview of some of the new pictures.

Pumpkin Time!

Yes, it is that time of year everyone. Although in Florida you may not know it...fall has arrived. Pumpkins are being sold all over the U.S., so it was time to select Foster's first one! Auntie Meme helped us choose a papa, mama, and baby pumpkin to represent our family. We also chose pumpkins for Welli and Chloe, as we simply cannot forget our canine sister and brother.

Foster is 3 Months Old!

Saturday, October 15th, Foster celebrated his 3 month birthday with his mom and Auntie Jaime. We took him out for his birthday at a favorite spot at Towncenter in Jacksonville, Cantina Laredo. We enjoyed a fabulous lunch and even cocktails. Unfortunately Foster only got drunk off his milk. Another 20 years and 9 months to go buddy!

"How can I tell you which was is Connect-ti-cut, when I don't know what Connect-ti-cut is?"

Did anyone besides my sister place that quote?

With the holidays coming, everyone should know it. It is from a favorite movie of ours...Holiday Inn!

Anyway, Foster and I traveled to Connecticut to stay with our friends Sondra and Harper in Noank and visit my grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousin. We spent 5 days visiting the sights around Noank, including Mystic and Madison. We even spent a day shopping in Hartford. Foster made his first friend in Harper and they got along so well. Harper was so cute because all he wanted to do was touch Foster, especially his face. He was sweet to him and even helped take off his socks for him at bedtime. We went to the apple orchard to take the boys apple picking, but since the 85 degree weather apparently followed me from Florida to CT, our day adventure ended before it started with a whole lot of sweat. However, we did get some cute photos!

Foster met his Great Grandparents, Gigi and Granddaddy and spent some time with his Great Aunt Wendy, Great Uncle Vinnie, and Second Cousin, Jessica. Of course everyone was in love with him, just as I am!

We look forward to making another trip up north this spring with Mama Jill! Thanks Allen family for having us!

Foster Earns His Wings!

In October Foster traveled to Connecticut and back on his first plane ride. He slept most of the way there and back, but did open his eyes for a while and share his smiles with airport staff and of course all the ladies! He also enjoyed the company of the nose hair growling wildly out of our airplane row neighbor's nose. He was quite impressed with it! Yuck!

Flying with a baby was a completely new experience for me, and I actually learned quite a few things during the adventure.

#1- Traveling with a stroller gives you special privileges:
(I flew out of Atlanta, so that mom and dad could watch the dogs for me- Thanks guys! And so that we could just fly directly to Providence, the closest airport to Noank, CT)

Upon arrival at the airport, we were actually greeted with smiles and helping hands. The Skycap came around his desk to help place my checked luggage on the scale, an act which anyone who has ever flown out of Atlanta would know to be foreign! Then, when we got to the security check, we were directed to a special line for strollers, a line that had absolutely no waiting. I was excited since the regular line had a Disney World length wait time. The TSA workers were very polite and even made a joke about testing the breastmilk I had stored in my carry on luggage! Who knew they were capable of being friendly?

#2- Stewardesses are just for looks!
So, a mom with a baby in a stroller obviously traveling alone with a diaper bag, a carry on bag, a stroller, and a carseat certainly does not need any help, right? Wrong! Even someone who is as independent as I am cannot do it all! However, I must look like I can, because as I arrived at the plane door, two stewardesses continued to carry on their obviously important conversation instead of offering to help me. Some may say, "They must not have seen you there." I believe eye contact would prove that to be false. I even shot them my best " I need help" look, but clearly it went either unnoticed or they just didn't feel like helping. I finally had to ask one of them to carry my bags down to my seat so that I could separate the carseat and stroller, while holding a baby and make it to my seat without breaking a serious sweat!

#3- A Stinky diaper is just a way of life on an airplane:
After getting situated on the plane in a space smaller than my linen closet, with a baby in my arms, I asked a very important question that all new moms ask when on their first plane ride. Where do I change a stinky diaper? The response was not what I expected from a Delta stewardess. She said in a very matter of fact tone, "There is no changing table in the lavatory." Am I mistaken or did that not even come close to answering my question. When I asked again, she said I could put the seat down and change my baby on the seat of the toilet in the lavatory. Are you kidding me? Have you ever been in an airplane lavatory? You can barely stand in a lavatory, let alone attempt to change the diaper of a squirmy baby on top of a toilet seat that is small enough that a tiny kitten might roll off. So, the next time you catch a whiff of something a bit fowl on an airplane, chances are, someone is doing exactly what I had to do about an hour into the flight...Changing a diaper on my lap. How I came out of the exercise without poop on any part of my body is a miracle! Equal rights for all? Not for babies who need changed on an airplane!

Well, I came out of the adventure no worse for the wear, but with an whole new attitude towards all those people I see traveling with diaper wearing mini-adults!
